melting
Duration - 10:30
Instrumentation - 2 Clarinets in Bb, Bass Clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass
melting is a deliberate act of compositional self-sabotage. After becoming hyperaware of my repetitive tendency to structure pieces in a narrative, linear way (exposition of an idea, rising action, climax, repeat), it became time to try something else. Rather than attempting a dialogue with the listener, melting sets up a primordial soup of elemental materials and shapes them in crude, brutal ways. Gestures mutate slowly over time and geometrically in space; in particular, concepts usually applied to pitch such as complementation and canonic transformation are instead applied to texture. There is a special focus on the symmetrical, antiphonal characteristics of the ensemble.
melting is an expression of pure, abrasive desire to be, respectively driven in its conception and actual construction by the inverse spaces of my sense of structure and the music itself.
