Fleeting Shadows begins with a chorale opening and gradually passes through various states of aggression before reaching a sparse, nocturnal center. Then, little by little, it works its way back in order to redouble the effort of the opening. Pervasive throughout the piece is the short-long idea announced at the very beginning, along with its associated melodic interval of a fourth.
